Generate your first alt text

Upload images or scan a URL, generate alt text, and get it into your store in about two minutes.

The quickest way to see whether ShopAltAI is any good. Two minutes.

Upload images

  1. Go to Alt TextAlt Text Generator
  2. Drag images onto the upload area, or click it to browse
The Alt Text Generator upload area with several product images queued

You can queue up to 20 images at a time — PNG, JPG, WebP, or GIF, up to 5MB each.

Generation settings

Above the upload area, five controls shape what gets written:

  • Style — how the alt text reads. Descriptive (the default) covers the subject and any context that matters, without listing every visual detail. Concise keeps to the essential subject only, as short as possible. SEO-focused describes the image accurately while naturally supporting image search.
  • Language — English is the only option today.
  • Max length — a slider from 40 to 300 characters, defaulting to 125. Every style still fits inside this limit — the setting controls how much context is included, not whether the limit is respected. Worth setting deliberately before a big batch: a shorter max length means terser results across everything you generate in that run.
  • SEO keyword (optional) — a word or phrase to naturally work into the alt text where it fits.
  • Custom instruction (optional) — free text for anything specific. If set, it overrides the Style setting above.
  1. Check the credit count shown above the button — it tells you how many generations you have left this month
  2. Click Generate

Let it run. Each image takes a few seconds — it's reading the picture, not looking up a filename.

Read the results

Each result appears next to its image.

Generated alt text displayed beside the product image it describes

Read one against its photo. This is the moment you find out whether the product works for your catalogue. It should describe material, colour and form — things only visible in the image.

Edit and save

Any result can be edited before you keep it. Click into the text, change what you want, and save.

Copy or export

  • Open a result (click Edit) to get a Copy button for that alt text
  • To move many at once, select rows in Alt Text Listing and Export — CSV, Excel, JSON, or a WordPress import file
  • If you're connected through a platform's plugin, accepted results write straight into your store from there — that's a separate flow from this dashboard; see your platform's guide
  • Everything you generate stays in Alt Text Listing for 90 days, then it's deleted — see Credits and plans

Scan a website instead

If your images are already online, you don't need to upload them.

  1. Open the Scan a URL tab
  2. Paste a page address
  3. ShopAltAI finds every image on that page missing alt text
  4. Tick the ones you want and click Generate

Up to 20 per batch. If a page has more, run it again for the rest.

Why alt text matters

It's how screen-reader users understand an image, and how search engines index it. An image with no alt text is invisible to both.

It's also increasingly a legal requirement: the European Accessibility Act has applied since June 2025 to anyone selling to EU consumers, and US ADA cases routinely cite missing image descriptions.
